Restaurant Review: Johnny Rockets, Ezdan Mall

I love the movie ‘Back To The Future’ with the main character belting out ‘Johnny B. Goode’ in a pivotal scene. So entering this chain restaurant I felt very positive about its décor representing the 1950s with the red booths, mini jukeboxes and other nostalgic touches. Perhaps a little biased towards the fun of that era I liked the joint before I even sat down. It had me at hello!

The server added a little touch of friendliness by bringing empty condiment dishes to the table in which he made a smiley ketchup face – kids will love this. Other restaurants may give you little packets of ketchup or a bottle on the side; here the extra element of getting your own smiley ketchup face is pretty awesome. It was just a shame that both my dinner companion and I did not order anything that required ketchup which makes it a waste of food in my view. Yes we went to a burger joint and didn’t order fries.
I may seem a little biased towards this place but I am writing my review with the benefit of hindsight and so perhaps it is tinged by the positive evening I had there. I wanted – no needed – a good old greasy burger and Johnny Rockets delivered. I ordered The Route 66 with an extra option of a fried egg on top. This burger patty comes covered in Swiss cheese, grilled onions and mushrooms with mayonnaise sauce. My fried egg looked and tasted perfect and together with the burger choice certainly fulfilled my craving for a greasy hot burger.
I liked the way the burgers came packaged in paper which always makes it easier to eat a big burger. I would only recommend my particular burger if you too needed something greasy. Otherwise there are better burger options, like The Original which is more of a traditional burger with relish, mustard and mayonnaise. It also has the required salad components of shredded lettuce, tomato, pickle and chopped onions. It was also a positive burger experience for my dinner companion who did not want a grease-a-thon burger.
What I really want to rave about though are the shakes.

We shared the Oreo Cookies & Cream shake. It had a premium vanilla ice cream base with a real whipped cream topping. The temperature of the shake was perfect and the creaminess was spot on. They also gave us the metal cup the shake was mixed in with the extra shake that didn’t fit in the glass. I would happily order any of the other shakes based upon that experience alone.

This is the burger joint all other burgers will be compared to. This is the milkshake all other milkshakes will be compared to. This could quite probably be the one burger joint to ‘rule them all’.
